5 Things to Check Before You Turn on Your Furnace

Winter is coming…

Fall is right around the corner, which signals the beginning of brisk mornings, pumpkin spice lattes, and all of the autumn leaves. This also means that it’s time to turn on your furnace before the REAL winter hits us. To stay safe and warm this season, take some time to check these 5 simple things before turning on your furnace:

Check Your CO Detectors:

We know, checking your carbon monoxide detector isn’t everyone’s favorite thing to do, but it’s one of those adulting things we have to know. When your furnace runs, the carbon monoxide, released as a byproduct of burning fuel, should be safely filtered out of your home if working correctly. However, time and weather can damage the ventilation or block the vents. Check the batteries and replace your detectors every five to seven years. This will keep you and your family safe and healthy.

Keepin’ It Clean:

A safe space is a clean space. While it’s normal for dust and dirt to collect around your furnace, it’s not safe to have a random box of garage tools, or any additional clutter sitting on top of the furnace. Be sure to clear the areas around your furnace so that nothing is within four feet – this is a fire hazard. Clean equals safe!

Change The Filters:

Of course you want the right amount of heat in your home when the chilly Minnesota air hits. And maybe some fuzzy blankets…paired with warm cider. While we can’t provide you with the cider or the throw blankets, we can help change your filters to let the heat flood your home. Changing your intake air filter monthly ensures that clean air flows into your home.

Need to Vent? Do It!

We all need to vent some days; the same goes for your home. Maintaining clear ducts and ventilation for your heating and air conditioning is extremely beneficial to your home and to your comfort. If your home has a venting system that goes directly outside the side of a wall, make sure that there is nothing outside or around it that could potentially block the system later on. If your home has a chimney that vents up through the roof, check to see where debris from around your roof may have fallen through the opening.
