5 Signs Your Furnace Needs Service

Picture this: you’re sitting at home, falling asleep listening to a podcast, and all of a sudden – THUD. Your furnace downstairs starts making a weird noise. Or maybe you’re outside doing yard work and see a flashing yellow light coming from your HVAC unit. Whatever your situation is, here are some common signs that signal it’s time for a furnace tune-up:

“Honey, what’s that noise?”

When you hear things that don’t sound pleasing, much less normal for your heating system, it’s probably time for a service. Now, most HVAC systems have noises while running. However, anything that relates to a hissing, dripping, or unusually loud humming noise, it’s a smart idea to call us here at HomeWorks for a Tune-Up.

Sneaky Issues:

Not all issues with your furnace will be obvious. Sometimes these problems will arise in the form of rising utility bills. So, if you notice that your system has to work harder to keep the house warm during the fall and winter months and your electric bill starts to shoot up, it’s recommended to have a licensed professional (*cough cough*, HomeWorks) check on your system for internal system problems.

Yellow Means Call!

Yellow means call – and we aren’t kidding. Almost all HVAC systems will have a yellow signal, called a pilot light, installed. The pilot light is there to warn you of issues within your furnace unit. If the yellow light is flashing or lit, it means there is an issue with your system and you should call immediately to have it looked at for a repair.

Drips, Leaks, and Pools

Any sign of liquid means there is an issue with your furnace, whether it’s gas or water. Keep in mind that while both of these indicate that something is wrong with your unit, one of them is significantly more dangerous than the other. If you smell gas, this could very well be a gas leak. Shut off your furnace immediately and then shut off the gas supply value. Do not light any open flames in your home and call us as soon as possible. As for water leakages, it isn’t as dangerous to your health as a gas leak is, but it can still affect your heating and air conditioning. Feel free to call us 24/7 at (651) 237-2698 if you suspect any of the issues listed above.

The Faulty Thermostat:

A thermostat’s job is to relay the information of how much heat you want to produce in your home. When that breaks, your furnace becomes confused, and so do you. The easiest fix? Call HomeWorks! We’ll figure out whether it resulted from the common electrical issues, such as loose wiring or blown fuses, or if it stemmed from another problem area – all with the excellent service that our company is known for!

Whether your furnace is working normally, or you’ve had issues with your unit in the past, it is never a bad idea to keep an eye on your system. Preventative care can help to solve some of these issues, but when the moment presents itself, HomeWorks is here for you to help solve your heating needs!
