How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?

Tank water heaters have been a staple in homes for decades, providing us with a clean, reliable source of hot water. However, tankless water heaters are considerably different—they’re much smaller, and they don’t have a giant cylinder that they hold and store hot water in. That alone brings up a number of questions people have about how this technology works.
The Tankless Water Heater Cycle
So how does one of these systems actually provide your home with hot water? Simple—it heats the water as you need it. When you turn on the hot water tap, water starts flowing through your hot water pipes. This turns on the heating elements in your tankless water heater, which quickly get up to temperature and start rapidly heating the water flowing into it from your main water supply.
Once the water reaches your ideal temperature, it’s sent throughout your home’s hot water lines. The hot water may not start flowing from your faucet immediately (especially if it’s a faucet on the far end of the house) but it will eventually come through, and once it does it’ll keep coming until you shut it off or until your water supply shuts off. However, if you have a recirculating system installed in your home as well, the hot water will continue to flow through your pipes at all times, which means you’ll enjoy hot water within moments of turning on your tap each and every time!
Why is this preferable? For starters, when you never have to worry about running out of hot water, you don’t have to rearrange your life to accommodate for it. Nobody likes to wake up in the morning and face the prospect of a cold shower while they do their laundry and run their dishwasher. With a tankless water heater, you don’t have to. Likewise, when you don’t have to keep a tank of water at your ideal temperature, you don’t have to burn energy in doing so. This helps you save money on utility bills.

Selecting the Right Tankless Water Heater
Choosing the right unit for your home is also important. Our Twin Cities tankless water heater experts help you choose the perfect one based on your home’s water needs and usage. Smaller heaters save energy and cost less, while larger heaters can produce more water at a time, and service larger homes with families that depend on having an abundance of water available to them at any given point. In either case, it’s important to get a unit that can keep up with what you need.
It’s also important to choose a heater that can keep up with the harsh demands of a Minnesota winter. When frigid temperatures set in, it’s important to select a heater that has enough power to overcome the particularly cold water and cold pipes that transport the water around your home. We make sure to factor this into our decision when advising you on the best choices for your home.
